Matchbox automobiles are probably in every man's past. Nearly every small boy at one time or another has owned at least one matchbox car, but doubtless more than just one. These diecast automobiles are the fabric of molding our imagination as a child. I am able to remember setting up tracks and tiny cities as a child and running my matchbox automobiles for hours at a time. I also remember my mother getting annoyed as she would step on them in the middle of the night or simply coming into my room at any given time.
Matchbox automobiles are as well-liked today as they were some 50 years back. Each Wal-Mart or dollar store has some sort of display with these diecast models hanging on the rack. Many grown men are now into picking up a chunk of there childhood thru Matchbox auto collecting. If you haven't yet started, I will outline a couple of things to get you moving in this wonderful diecast hobby.
First I advise to do a little research on the history of Matchbox cars. This may get you in touch with the root of origin. Secondly I advise that you find a make or series of Matchbox vehicles that interest you the most. There are many sorts of these autos to gather. The modern series is considered anything produced after 1970. This surrounds many other types of series. The Across America Series features vehicles from every one of the 50 states in the States. Each car came with a license plate outlining the two letter state shortening and the a 3 digit number showing the order in which the state joined the Union. The Coca-Cola Series featured Matchbox vehicles decorated with the Coca Cola brand on them. The Convoy Series was centered around tractor trailer wagons and matching trailers.
The Superfast autos came with high quality frictionless spindles and wheels and were made to emulate the Hot Wheels automobiles for competition reasons. Another kind of Matchbox automobile series is the King Size models or Super Kings as they are infrequently called. These were bigger size diecast models that were made to struggle against Corgi and Dinky models. The Yesteryear Series is a group of cars that are modeled around classic vehicles from all around the world. Vintage and rare Matchbox autos are the prizes of most collectors collections. These feature the early Lesney diecast and many are still being found by collectors today.
It is never too late to begin picking up as we are now in a new calender year and the 2008 models are hitting the shelves. Check regionally for a diecast club in your neighborhood, you may be shocked to find one right around the corner from you. Several retail shops like K-Mart, Wal-Mart and many buck stores have quite a selection of models even from some yours back. Also with the morning of the web, eBay has changed into a collectors dream for finding nearly any sort of Matchbox automobile you have you eye on.
Lastly, this hobby is all about fun, so don't lose sight in the fact of the great nostalgia you will enjoy from picking up your childhood toys from days gone past.
